What is Salt Therapy?

Salt Therapy, also called Halotherapy, is a therapeutic and 100% natural, drug-free, non-invasive treatment. Salt therapy is a method of inhaling pure, dry, micronized salt air particles. These particles reach the deepest area of the lungs, absorbing bacteria and pollutants and providing an anti-inflammatory and cleansing effect. This process supports and strengthens the body’s immune system by eliminating toxins and allergens that are trapped within the mucus lining of the respiratory system.

How does it work?

The word halo-therapy comes from the Greek word halo, meaning salt. It is a modern holistic method that mimics the micro climates of the salt mines. It is created by a special device called a halo-generator.

Dry pharmaceutical grade salt is heated and ground and crushed into very tiny micro-particles in a machine called a halogenerator. These dry aerosol micro-particles of salt are then dispersed into our Salt Grotto during a typical session. As a person relaxes in the Salt Grotto, the micro-particles are inhaled. The particles penetrate deep into the lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli. Bacteria and pollutants are dissolved as salt enters the lungs and respiratory system by eliminating mucus and opening constricted airways. Each Grotto's salt saturation is controlled and monitored.

Is Salt Therapy Safe?

Salt Therapy is completely safe.  It is a 100% drug-free, non-invasive, comfortable treatment with no side effects or potential health hazards. The only people who should avoid being in a salt chamber are those with severe chronic respiratory issues and those with open wounds and sores. It is advisable that people going into a salt chamber remove all personal jewelry, glasses and other belongings since salt can be corrosive to exposed metal

Who should not do salt therapy?

Salt therapy is not recommended for individuals with severe hypertension, cancer, heart problems, 3rd stage COPD (spitting blood), infectious disease, fever, or active tuberculosis.

Salt Therapy Side Effects

Salt therapy is a 100% safe, natural, and globally recognized wellness practice for treating and repairing damage to the lungs and by extension, the skin. Throughout your treatments, you may experience a few of the following side effects, most of which will dissipate within three to four days. If you're recovering from more serious lung or skin conditions such as asthma, long Covid, eczema or psoriasis, your side effects may get a bit worse as your lungs are cleansed and healed before they get better. The following side effects are an indication that the therapy is working on a deeper level. However, even without experiencing side effects, your body is still absorbing negative ions from the salt and reaping the benefits of Halotherapy.

As fluid is cleared from the lungs, it is common for individuals to experience a runny nose during the therapy or increased coughing that should subside shortly after the session. This is normal and not a harmful side effect of the therapy.

  • Tickle in the throat

  • Scratchy throat

  • Increased coughing due to an excess mucus buildup

  • Pressure in their sinuses

  • Runny nose

  • Cold symptoms

  • Itchy scalp and/ or skin

  • Slight skin irritation for those with hypersensitive skin.

  • Minor skin irritation

Fatigue, Stress & Anxiety

Salt therapy can help reduce stress, anxiety, and fatigue in several ways:

Relaxation: Salt therapy creates a soothing and calming environment that can help you relax and unwind. The dim lighting, soft music, and comfortable seating in our salt room can all contribute to a peaceful atmosphere.

Deep breathing: Salt therapy encourages deep breathing, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. When you inhale salt particles, you also inhale negative ions, which can improve your mood and energy levels.

Immune system support: Salt therapy can boost your immune system, which can help you fight off infections and illnesses that can cause stress and fatigue.

Respiratory health: Salt therapy can improve your respiratory health, which can reduce stress and anxiety associated with breathing difficulties.

Skin health: Salt therapy can also improve your skin health, which can boost your self-esteem and reduce stress and anxiety related to skin conditions.

Prenatal and Children's Salt Therapy

Salt Therapy is 100% all natural and thus makes it safe during pregnancy and for children as young as three months. Spending 45 minutes in the Salt Grotto is the equivalent of spending 3 days in the salt air at the beach! It is an all natural way to significantly help issues such as allergies, sinus, respiratory issues, swelling, pain and much more. Salt Therapy is a natural immune booster which is great for expecting mothers who cannot take medication.

Salt Therapy can help with sinuses and allergies.

The body tends to produce more mucus during pregnancy because of the increased levels of hormones. Because of this, women usually notice they either begin to have allergies and sinus issues, or those issues worsen. Salt Therapy is recommended by many doctors because it is an all natural way to help clear up those symptoms without the use of medication.

Salt Therapy can help with swelling.

Swelling is caused by your body holding more water than usual when you're pregnant. Salt is a natural anti-inflammatory meaning spending time in our Grotto can help to reduce edema in the legs, ankles and feet.

Salt Therapy can help with stress and anxiety.

Salt Therapy produces negative ions, when these negative ions reach our bloodstream, they are believed to neutralize free radicals and produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin. This is helpful in alleviating depression, relieving stress, and boosting our daytime energy.

Salt Therapy for Children

Salt therapy is not only safe for children but is highly recommended! It is a 100% drug free, non-invasive and comfortable treatment with no side effects or potential health hazards. Children as young as 3 months have benefited greatly and respond to the therapy even more quickly than do adults. Children are more prone to respiratory problems because they pick up more viruses and their lungs are not fully developed until about the age of 9. In addition, children also take more breaths per minute than adults do and due to their height at a younger age, are also breathing in air lower to the ground. This means they are breathing in more polluted air, more often and without a fully developed respiratory filtering system. Below are just a few common conditions that may be helped with regular Salt Therapy.

Croup:

Croup is a common infection in children that causes swelling in the upper part of the airway in the neck along with a barking cough, with or without fever and may cause breathing issues. Younger children are more affected by croup because their airways are smaller. A small amount of swelling can make it very hard for a baby or young child to breathe. Croup is most often seen in children 3 months to 5 years old.

Salt therapy can help relieve croup symptoms by relieving inflammation in the airways. Opening the airways and cleansing them of any irritation and allergens allows children suffering from croup to breathe better. This in turn helps relieve a persistent and debilitating cough and therefore helps them sleep better.

Asthma:
Asthma is a condition that causes breathing problems in many children. Kids may cough, wheeze, or be short of breath. This happens because airways in the lungs get swollen, smaller, and filled with mucus. It can be mild or severe and can really affect children's daily activities.
Much the same as croup, salt therapy can help relieve asthma in children by relieving inflammation in the airways so they can breathe easier. Breathing in dry salt lines the walls of the airways which helps clear mucus, allergens and other asthma triggers. The salt in our grotto can also thin mucus, making it less sticky so it’s easier for the young body to expel it. With regular salt therapy, many children report less coughing, less congestion – and easier breathing. Some of our young clients even tell us they don’t need to use their Ventolin as often. Salt therapy is also a non-invasive, drug-free and natural therapy that is safe for children of all ages. It is gentle on even the smallest premature lungs to help clear congestion and promote a good night’s sleep.

Eczema:
Eczema is a common skin condition that usually begins early in childhood. The affected skin is dry, red and itchy. Sometimes these areas of skin can become cracked, weepy and then scab over. The cause of eczema is not known. If a member of your family has eczema, asthma or hay fever, then it is more likely that your child will have eczema. Eczema can be triggered by a number of things, such as: becoming overheated with clothing, blankets, heaters dryness of the skin, irritation from soaps, detergents, fabrics or other chemicals, food allergies or intolerances, allergies to environmental allergens, such as dust mites, plant pollens or animal fur or viruses and other common infections.
Salt is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, so when the dry salt lands on a child’s skin it can help relieve sore, itchy and cracked skin caused by eczema. The salt also helps to restore skin’s good bacteria, while stimulating cell regeneration and exfoliation.  As salt therapy is natural, it’s perfect for toddlers and babies with sensitive skin.
